Very Vivian - Quick Bits

It's been awhile since I've done a Vivian post, and to be honest it's because I haven't really known what to say.  Things have been busy, but normal with Vivian, so instead of one big post I thought I would throw together something with some quick Vivian news.

  • Vivian and Blair passed their most recent session of swimming lessons - on to Salamander!

  • Today while riding in the car and listening to the radio - "Mommy, this 'Turn Down for What'.  This my favourite song."
  • She has basically been living on Arrowroot cookies with Nutella on them.  Whatevs.
  • Grandma got her some new Bogs boots for Easter and she's basically been living in them
  • She's been doing super well at riding her new bike from Easter - so nice to take her to the park down the street on her bike!
  • She has another dance recital coming up, this time with two numbers.  I can't wait to see her out there in her little tap shoes!
  • She's been going to nursery school with Blair once a week, which has been awesome for a lot of reasons.  It's been so fun to hear her come home talking about her teachers and her school - I can't wait for her to start JK in the fall!
Yeah - not a whole lot going on right now!  But now that I've said that I'm sure she will come up with some new adventure tomorrow!

Accidental Collections

It all started with this little Florida tray that I got in high school  It has served me well over the years - holding keys, spare change, jewellery, whatever little odds and ends might be around usually end up in this tray.

Then one day I came across this little Nashville one.  The graphics were pretty, and since Florida had served me so well, I grabbed it.  Vivian quickly claimed it as her own, and is now often holding her little plastic bracelets or something.

My big, beautiful Vegas tray has found a home in the kitchen...

And my hand-painted Atlantic City one might just have to join it.  Because obviously.

Then there's the Halifax tray that I got for my "Wall O' Canadiana" that I swear will come together one day.

And then last week I found this Niagara Falls one that obviously had to come home with me.

So it seems I have accidentally started a collection of travel trays.  I didn't really intend on it, but I think sometimes those are the best collections - the ones that happen all on their own.  Had I gone out looking specifically for souvenir travel trays then I probably would have never found any of these.  Now to find a place for all of them...

Treats of the Week - Sweet Sunshine

Don't you just feel so much better after a few consecutive sunny days?  Good old Vitamin D - I instantly feel healthier.  I'm trying to give up artificial sweetener, so I've been drinking water and lemon like a mofo.  I assume, at least, that most mofos drink a lot of water and lemon.  It's been a sunshiney and lovely week - here are the treats!

  • Batman: The Animated Series has been added to Netflix which makes me very happy.
  • Courtney and I took Vivian and Blair for a quick trip to Rock Glen on Wednesday after swimming lessons - just nice to go for a little wander.

  • I've still been working away on some spring cleaning and purging - this week I did a lot of electronic purging.  It's amazing how good it feels to unsubscribe to mailing lists that you no longer want, purge things on Pinterest, Bloglovin, all of it.  I feel like I have so much more time now that there's less crap to sort through every time I log into something.
  • Mixology ended this week and I have to say I loved that quirky little show.  I'm actually really glad that it only ended up being one season because it works really well as a one-off.  I'm hoping it will be added to Netflix soon, or else I will have to figure out how to download it or something, it would make a great little marathon show.
  • My mom's lilacs are the prettiest - I love how dark and fragrant they are.

  • I took Vivian for a little stroll on the beach at Port Franks yesterday.  It was so nice and quiet down there - driftwood everywhere too if you're into that sort of thing.

  • I managed to stay up somewhat late enough on Friday night to check out the meteor shower.  I headed outside with my blanket at about 1:30 a.m. and saw a couple of shooting stars.  Either that or I was seeing things because I was so cold and tired.  Either way, it was nice.
  • Pizza + Beer + Patio + Good company = a lovely time
  • My mom bought herself a pair of Toms in a size too big for her, so my giant feet happily have a new pair of Toms.  Yay me!

Summer TV 2014

It's that time of year - summer TV is gearing up and I am ready to watch some trashy shows!  Here's what I'll be up to this summer.

  • May 20 - FOX - "I Wanna Marry 'Harry'" - Yes, somehow there is a show where women think they are competing to marry Prince Harry.  Seriously, this is a thing.

  • May 22 - FOX - "Gang Related" - Terry O'Quinn is back on TV so I will be tuning in.

  • May 22 - NBC - "Last Comic Standing" - One of my favourite reality competition shows has returned this summer for some more laughs.  It won't be the same without Greg Giraldo, but I'm still looking forward to it.
  • May 25 - HBO - "The Normal Heart" - Not really a summer show, but this HBO movie looks incredible.

  • May 27 - SyFy - "The Wil Wheaton Project - I'm not totally sure who will carry this in Canada (I'm assuming Space?) but it should make for a fun" and nerdy time.
  • May 28 - FOX - "So You Think You Can Dance?" - My favourite summer show!
  • May 29 - NBC - "Undateable" - I really like Chris D'Elia so I will be checking this one out for sure.

  • May 30 - NBC - "Crossbones" - John Malkovich is playing Blackbeard the pirate.  Do you really need to know anything else?  I don't.

  • June 1 - AMC - "Halt and Catch Fire" - AMC certainly has a long list of amazing shows in their roster, but there are also a lot of duds.  Here's hoping this tech thriller will deliver.

  • June 2 - ABC - "Mistresses" - I loved this show last summer.  It was just ridiculous and soapy enough that it was perfect for the summer.  Had it premiered in the summer I don't think it would have fared so well, but I love it in the summer.

  • June 6 - Netflix - "Orange is the New Black" - If you haven't watched the first season yet, you've got time to binge before season two is released on June 6th.  I will most likely be up until 4:00 a.m. that night watching as much as I can.
  • June 22 - HBO - "True Blood" - Back for its final season.  The plot may have gotten a little crazy in the last few seasons, but I will continue to tune in as long as Joe Manganiello and Alexander Skarsgard are there.
  • June 25 - CBS - "Big Brother" - One of my many summer guilty pleasures.  I don't know how I ended up getting hooked on this show, but I really look forward to it every summer.
  • June 27 - Disney - "Girl Meets World" - Don't even pretend like you're not excited for this Boy Meets World spinoff.  We are all excited for this.

  • June 29 - HBO - "The Leftovers" - HBO takes on The Rapture.

  • August 4 - ABC - "Bachelor in Paradise" - After not having my beloved Bachelor Pad last summer, I'm happy to see that they've "retooled" it and it's coming back as Bachelor in Paradise.  Bring on the drama!
  • August 8 - HBO - "The Knick" - Okay, the trailer says that it's Cinemax, but I keep seeing the previews on HBO.  This turn of the century surgical show from Steven Soderbergh looks creepy and awesome.

Treats of the Week - Long Weekend

It's hard to believe that we've finally made it to the May 2-4 weekend!  It's been a busy and treat-filled week fo sho.

  • I finally got around to recovering my gossip bench - it looks so much nicer with this vintage sheet fabric on it!

  • I went to see Godzilla - which was pretty much amazing.
  • So excited to see Trudy pop up in Mad Men this week!  Trudy 4 lyfe.
  • I got my yard work done this weekend - which isn't exactly a treat, but it look so much better when it's done, and is especially nice to have good weather for getting stuff done.
  • I rewatched Her on the weekend as well - still one of my favourite recent movies.
  • Being full of delicious sushi.
  • I've been hit hard with the spring cleaning/purging bug. Is there anything more satisfying than getting rid of piles of excess crap?
  • We took the kids to Greenview Aviaries today and it went about as well as can be expected with the group of kids we had.  Vivian had a blast until it was time to leave when she ended up having a meltdown for most of the drive home.

Treats of the Week - Hey, remember what a sunburn is?

Holy cow, I actually have a touch of a sunburn.  I'd almost forgotten what happens when you are outside in the sun for extended periods of time.  Science!  Here's the week's treats - hope everyone had a lovely Mother's Day!

  • Scoring a great downtown parking spot - and then not getting a parking ticket when you really should have.
  • The magnolia trees are all in bloom and it looks so pretty!  I'd love to have a big magnolia tree in my yard one day.
  • I went to see Neighbours on the weekend (and yes, I will insist on spelling it with a U) and it was even funnier than I was expecting it to be - I had a great time.
  • I had a great Mother's Day all around - flowers, gift cards, great weather, time with family and time at the beach.  Plus I got to eat Subway, which pretty much makes the day perfect.

  • Driving around just so you can finish listening to a good song on the radio.
  • People who leave their Superbucks receipts behind at the gas station - I will take that 23 cents, thank you!
  • Text message exchanges like this with my mother...

Very Vivian - The Dancing Bee

Last weekend marked Vivian's dancing debut with her very first dance recital.  She's been working hard all year and was super pumped for the final show!  First she got her hair done by Grandma - she looked so nice with her hair all done instead of looking like her usual raggamuffin self.

Once at the show she didn't have a moment's hesitation.  She was quite happy to be dropped off in the waiting area with the dance helpers while the rest of us went to watch the show.  She looked so happy and excited to be up on the stage - she really does seem to love it.  Sure, her dancing might have been more in her own style than what the other kids were doing.  And of course she was the one kid who fell when they all held hands to go in a circle.  And yes, she was the kid who got distracted and was looking at the lights instead of paying attention to the crowd.  But she was my little star.  I get so proud when I see her on stage - it's such a strange feeling!

After her turn she did well to sit and wait and watch all the other acts.  Then once she got wind that there were flowers involved we had to make a stop at the booth.

First she asked nicely.

The she got a little impatient.

The she happily and graciously accepted her roses.

It was so great to watch her dance, and she has another recital coming up in June with her other dance company.  She's a busy girl - hopefully it will be dance competitions before too long!

Easter Monday Antiquing

On Easter Monday I had the chance to spend the day wandering from antique shop to antique shop, just for the sake of wandering.  Delightful, right?  Of course I took pictures along the way to share here with you guys.  I didn't end up taking too much home, but I found so many good things!  Someone please feel free to sponsor my next antiques outing, it would make it go much better.

Starting at the Strathroy Antique Mall...

I want a new kitchen table, but can't decide on what I want.  I keep considering an old school chrome dinette table, but then I worry about Vivian getting paint on it or something.  I loved these two sets...

Barn lights galore - I didn't check the prices though.

There's one booth that I've mentioned before that has these amazing old war posters.  They had a bunch of different ones this time that are unbelievable.  They're around $200 each, otherwise I would buy them all.

I have a red version of this chair, and there's a green one just like this hiding in a back room at my work that I would love to take home with me.  They had a pair of them here for like $175 for the pair I think?

I thought these old animal prints would be cool in a kids room.

I mean, come on.  This jacket is adorbs.

I loved this chair and ottoman set like whoa.  It was in pristine condition and is just ugly enough for me to love it.  I think it was $175.

Then it was on to Memory Lane Antiques in London - the hoity-toity antiques.  This was purely a fun wander, no way I could buy stuff there.  There was so much amazing MCM stuff there, I about died and went to heaven.  Then I saw the prices and died again.

Ugh, campaign desk.  It was so awesome - and like $500.

I just loved how this whole set up could basically be a waiting room in Mad Men.

THIS COUCH.  I fell hard for this couch.  It was the perfect couch - the perfect lines, the perfect size, the perfect colour.  But it was $2500.  Goodbye beautiful, beautiful couch.

Have you ever seen a cooler rocking chair in your entire life?  I don't even like rocking chairs, but I would live in this.  $1600.

Just - ugh.  I want to live here.

This credenza was insanely long.  Like at least 12 feet.

After dragging myself out of Memory Lane it was time to hit up the Brydges Street Antique Market.

I loved this teeny-tiny table.  The best part was that both of the sides flip down and it's on casters.  Between those fun features and the fact that there's a lower shelf on there, it would make the perfect little bar cart for $85.

This just made me laugh - these "vintage" glasses are actually from IKEA.  Vintage fail.

This also made me laugh.  I don't know if you can tell from the picture, but it was a mirror that had the word "Reflect" on it, which just made me want to yell, "No, YOU reflect, mirror!  That's your job, not mine!"  Because yelling at inanimate objects is completely normal.

So what did I end up taking home from my grand antiquing adventure?  Well, I just had to bring home this brass dinosaur so he could hang out with my brass unicorn.  At $18 I almost didn't get him, but I'm so glad I did.

I also found this decorative plate of the Middlesex County Court House, my favourite building in London.  It was $3.

I even broke my book-buying ban to pick this up.  I love the Pop Culture and Philosophy series from Open Court Publishing, and didn't have this one so for $5 I had to get it.  Otherwise I'm doing very well at not buying books though, I promise!

Sigh, so many pretty things, so little money in the bank.  Seriously - someone sponsor my next trip and it will be a whole lot more fun!

Treats of the Week - Dance Recitals and Free Comics

It's been a busy one - and it's finally May!  I went with bare legs today and Vivian was kind enough to point out, "Mommy, your legs are so white!" so that was awesome.

  • It was Vivian's dance recital on the weekend and she did so well!  I was so proud - I get so emotional seeing her on stage!  It's dumb, but I can't help it.

  • I saw a random guy dancing on a street corner.  Just waiting for the light to change so he could cross, dancing away.
  • I only managed to make one stop at LA Mood, but I'm so glad I got out for a bit of Free Comic Book Day!  Vivian's dance recital kind of made it impossible for me to do more (I walked to Heroes, but was not about to wait in the line)  It was so nice to make it down there and say hi to everyone and scoop up a couple of free books though!

  • After stopping in at Free Comic Book Day, my friend Dan advised me to check out the Ting Comic and Graphic Arts Festival at the ARTS Project downtown.  I'm so glad I did - it was a great show and I loved seeing all the works.  I didn't take any pictures, but The Forest City Fashionista did a nice write up about it.
  • I got my Reliance bill with a $9 credit on it - score!
  • The Simpsons did a special Lego episode last night, and even though I don't watch the show regularly anymore I had to tune in for that one.  It was so adorable and clever!
  • The Strathroy Police officers brought my work a box of snacks to thank us for always being so helpful.
  • I got my hair done yesterday and it's awesome!  Mom did a nice angled cut and I love it.  It's more work than I'm used to, but I got lots of compliments at work today so it's worth it!  You can kind of see in the picture to the right how short it is in the back.

Have a great week!
