Cleaning out my closet (literally)

I have, at certain points in my life, been accused of being a clothes horse.  I can assure you that this is no longer the case.  I don't know if it's just the impending season change, a feeling like I should dress more "mom-like" or just a case of "what's the point, I'm never going to fit in any of these ever again anyway", but I've been getting rid of clothes like crazy.

Don't believe me?  (Mom, I'm talking to you.)  Please find my complete wardrobe inventory.  A.K.A., the most boring blog post ever.

**Updated to include further purging!**

12 10 T-shirts that I currently wear on a regular basis.
Most of them are from TeeFury and are related to Lost.

7 3 long sleeved shirts that actually fit me.
4 of them were bought so I could stop wearing maternity clothes after Vivian was born, so I think they're too big for me now, but it will make me too sad if I pack them up and then have to drag them out again when nothing fits me when it starts to get cooler out  I packed them up - here's hoping I don't regret it!

5 4 "good" hoodies (or "goodies", if you will)

7 pairs of jeans.
2 pairs fit
4 pairs can get done up, but will not be worn in public
1 pair are being kept in the vain hope that I'll be able to wear them again

1 sweater and 3 cardigans.
Yes, 2 of the cardigans are argyle and the other is plaid.  I'm awesome like that.

5 long sleeved shirts in the "can't quite wear it yet" pile.
I think I can get away with wearing 3 of them now though.

8 5 T-shirts in the "not quite there yet" section.  (I've tried them on and I can wear more of them than I thought!)
I think 4 of them won't be worn again, but again, there's the vain hope.

2 suits - one with just pants, one with pants and a skirt

4 non-suit skirts

3 pairs of work pants
2 pairs of work capris

1 pair of yoga pants
2 pairs of jogging pants
4 loungy pajama hoodies

5 tank tops (that don't fit yet)  I let them go, tank tops are cheap and these ones are pretty old.
10 6 pairs of shorts that I can't wear (and two pairs are board shorts, which are more of a bathing suit than clothes)

3 pairs of pajama pants
2 pairs of pajama capris
1 pajama short/running shorts (seriously)
2 pajama tank tops
9 6 lazy pajama T-shirts
1 lazy long sleeved shirt
10 camisole/under sweater tank top type things

14 12 dresses.  I had no idea I had 14 dresses

3 pairs of shorts.  These are currently what I wear every single day.

2 pairs of wedges
4 pairs of heels
4 belts

1 pair of Doc Martens from high school that I can't bear to get rid of even though I haven't worn them in 10 years.
1 pair of winter boots
1 pair of boots to wear with skirts/dresses etc.
1 pair of running shoes
1 pair of go everywhere fall shoes
1 pair of crappy camping/gardening running shoes
1 pair of sandals
8 pairs of flats (that all fit me - I checked)

1 winter coat (which is literally 10 years old.  It's a little sad)
1 plaid coat, which is vintage and handmade and I got it at a yard sale and can't let it go even though it doesn't fit right now
1 leather jacket, which I'm praying will fit this year
1 windbreaker
1 casual blazer

That's it.  Well, unless you count the 2 storage bins of maternity clothes in the basement.  Which I don't.  I think that's a pretty minimal wardrobe, what about you?  I'll admit, there's a lot of clothes (especially T-shirts) that I haven't totally gotten rid of.  Some T-shirts I just can't part with, so they've been moved to the office until I get around to giving them a new life as a pillow or a quilt or something.  They won't be coming back to my closet though, I promise!

I'm dying to get some clothes for fall, hopefully I can swing it.  What about you?  Completely overrun by clothes?  Or do you live in just the favourite stand-bys?

Vivian Vendredi - Never Slowing Down

This has been quite the week for Vivian.  We went to Niagara Falls on Sunday, and did Marineland on Monday.  She seemed to have a good time, despite not wanting to sleep at all during the day (that would require possibly missing something).  Her favourite parts?  The great big bathtub at the hotel and sneaking a juice box from the older kids.  She hid in the bathroom to try and drink it, and brought herself a cookie as well.  Letting my baby eat a cookie and drink juice on a hotel bathroom floor?  I expect my mother of the year award to arrive any day now.

She's developed a new love of Greek yogurt - especially when I let her feed it to herself.

Her top two teeth are just poking through - I can't wait to see her little bunny smile.

She has started kissing me back - although it's usually just a ploy to get my glasses.  She'll kiss me on my cheek, but while she's doing it, her little hand will be trying to steal my glasses.

She's also started to make a "come here" motion with her hands - usually it's directed at the cats.

That isn't it, but I think it's funny how blurry her arms are - crazy little flapper.

Sorry this video is so dark, but it was pretty late when she was up doing this.  She's taken to pushing her chair up against the shelves and then climbing up to pull all of her books off the shelf.

She's been really interested in looking at her books lately.  And yes, my living room always looks like that now.

So that's Vivian this week.  A climbing, waving, kissing, screaming, cruising little bundle of energy.

Vivian Vendredi - A Lover of Animals

This week, we ventured to the animal farm in Sarnia.  My mom brought her three foster kids, my sister brought Blair and I brought Vivian.  That's three adults versus five children, the oldest of which is 3.  Yeah, it was kind of a wild day.

We all survived, and all the kids seemed to have a good time, even though Vivian wasn't crazy about some of the animals.  Here she is meeting a goat.

"Hello there, goat.  Can I help you with something?"
"You had better stay away from my mermaid friend if you know what's good for you."

I think Vivian was just mad that she couldn't run around and play with the big kids.  Of course Blair makes it look so easy (and cute!)

Vivian did enjoy hanging around outside of her stroller though, even though she was wishing she was playing on the playground equipment like the big kids.

Next up?  A trip to Marineland on Monday.  Should be interesting.

I might be addicted to spray painting now.

I've been wanting to do something with Jagger's nightstand for some time now.

It's old, very beat up and just not a super great piece of furniture.  It serves its purpose though, and I don't want to spend a bunch of money on something new, so I thought it would be a good time to try some spray painting.

I ignored every single tutorial online about painting laminate furniture.  Instead, I just roughed it up a bit with some sandpaper and then went to town with some white spray paint.

The white did not go over well.  All it did was highlight every tiny bit of damage on the piece.  There's been quite a bit of water damage, so there's a lot of bubbling areas, and the glossy white paint might as well have painted giant arrows pointing at the damage.

I figured I would just press on and use the white spray paint as a primer coat and slap something else on. I wanted to try navy, but Lowes only had a glossy navy spray paint, and I thought it might be better to try something matte.  So I went with this cappuccino colour instead.

The knobs aren't great.  I couldn't decide what kind of knobs to go with, so I just grabbed the cheapest cheapo ones they had for now.  I also couldn't find a pull for the bottom drawer that was wide enough, so I just went with knobs as well.

I'm totally happy with how it turned out though - there is something very satisfying about painting with spray paint - some immediate gratification kind of thing.  Now I can't wait to find something else to spray paint!

Have you been updating anything lately?

Vivian Vendredi - Random

I couldn't decide quite what to share about Vivian this week, so I thought I would just post some random little tidbits about her right now, at 8 months old.

  • Vivian has been drinking a lot of water lately.  Like, a lot a lot.  The other day she was whining in the car, so I handed her her cup of water and she polished it off.  I filled it up with water from my bottle and gave it back to her and she had it finished again in about 15 minutes.  Not sure what that's all about.
  • Vivian tried pasta with tomato sauce this week.  It was a success, but she mostly just wanted to suck the sauce off of the pasta.

  • I got Vivian a new activity table this week (this one) and she loves it.  Anything she can stand at is okay in her book.  She can get a little rough with it though, the other day she was playing with it and literally all I saw were her legs flying up in the air.  I don't know if she was trying to climb onto it and fell, or if she was tipping it on its side and fell.  Either way, she fell.

  • She's climbing everything!  She's thisclose to climbing into the brown chair in the living room.

  • She's discovered the little bookcase at the end of the hallway.  Apparently I need to move it if I don't want all my Stephen King books to be ripped apart.
  • Her sleeping has really improved - we're still not sleeping through the night, but she's only waking up about every 4 hours, which is a huge improvement.
  • She seems to really need three naps a day.  Some days I'll try to push her through her third (dinner time) nap, but if I do, I end up paying for it.  She'll just take it anyway.  I'll put her down "for the night" at 7:00 or 7:30 thinking she'll be so tired because she's been up since 3:00, but she'll just sleep for 45 minutes or an hour then be up until 9:30 or 10:00.  She's always the one in control.
  • I'm thinking about putting away her exersaucer and jumperoo.  She will only go in them for like 10 minutes at a time, and mostly just likes to play with the toys from outside of them.  They take up so much room, but for some reason I don't want to put them away yet.  It will be like an admission of how big she's getting!
  • Changing Vivian is about the most challenging part of my day.  As soon as that diaper is off, so is she.  She flips over and crawls away as quickly as she can.  (I change her on the floor, she's not climbing off anything dangerous)  Usually it's fine, and I chase her down and eventually get the diaper on her, but the other day she scampered off towards her toys and the next thing I knew she was sitting in a little puddle.  Awesome.
  • She weighs 18 lbs 2 oz and is about 27 1/2 inches long.  Not super happy about the length - that means she only has about 1 1/2 inches before she's too big for her carseat.  Just what we need, something else to buy.

Late-Night Kijiji Shopping

I have a bad habit of browsing Kijiji at night when I should be doing something better with my time.  Usually I just browse things and add things to my watch list, and then later go back and wonder why the heck I had any interest in that in the first place.

Sometimes though, I bite.  I send that email asking if the item is still available, and then usually hope that the person on the other end tells me it's been sold, or they don't answer at all.  Not so this time.

I found these chairs.  I thought they were pretty interesting - they seemed to be in pretty good shape, looked a little mid-century modern and were the right price - $10 for both.  For both!  Yes, one is stained a different colour than the other, but I don't even have a table for these chairs to go with, so who cares.

So, what do you think?  Did I get a deal, or should I just do something useful at night instead of trolling Kijiji?  Have you gotten anything good from Kijiji, Craigslist, yard sales etc. lately?

Christmas Ornaments. Yes, I know it's August.

Welcome to another edition of "Ashlie completely overthinks something that should be totally simple".  I made the mistake of going to a Hallmark store the other day, and surprise, surprise, they have some of their Christmas ornaments out already.  Now, this Christmas is actually Vivian's second Christmas since she was born in December, but it's hard to count that first Christmas since she was so small, and we really didn't have time to do much of anything for her.  This year will be my first Christmas having a tree, potentially hosting some Christmas get-together, setting up traditions for Vivian, decorating the house...all of that.  So seeing all the ornaments made me decide that I would like to get Vivian an ornament each year as a keepsake.  When she's older, she'll be able to pick one out on her own, but for now the decision falls to me.

That's where the problem lies.

There are so many freaking options.  And the girl working at Hallmark totally figured me out by handing me a catalog of all the ornaments.  So now I can obsess over it until making the final decision.  Luckily for you, you can help!

Here are the ornaments that I'm favouring.

This Up ornament is the first in a new series of Pixar ornaments.  I like the idea of starting out with a series.  The collector in me is pulling for a complete set.

Of course, maybe I should go with something more commemorative, with the year on it.

Or I could get something like this for baby's second Christmas, but it doesn't match the baby's first Christmas ornament we already have.  (Thankfully, someone gave us one last year since I didn't get my ass in gear to get one myself.)

But I do love Dr. Seuss, and both of these are tickling my fancy.

Apparently I'm a big fan of the book scene ornaments, since I also completely love this Where the Wild Things Are ornament.  Vivian is a wild thing.

I love me some Batman, but this one would really be more of an ornament for me than for Vivian.

This one is just too awesome not to share.  Again, I don't think Vivian would actually appreciate it.

Or maybe I should just get her something more traditional, like a Twilight ornament.  Because that sort of thing actually exists.

Yeah.  That's for real.

What do you think?  Modern, traditional?  Part of a set?  I'm aware that I'm being a crazy person.

Vivian's Room is Growing Up

It's kind of funny that the things babies use grow and change almost as often as they do.  Vivian is already using her third bed (bassinet, playpen bassinet, crib) and after almost eight months, it became pretty clear that Vivian's room needed some updating.

First on the list?  Getting rid of the bed.  I loved having the single bed in her room to use as a change table, place to fold clothes, or just a place to crash when she was having a rough night.  However, due to her habit of flipping over and trying to crawl off the bed the second you take off her diaper, it was time for the bed to go.

We also had to get rid of the sweet boxes table...

Because it's just a stack of boxes with a piece of glass on top for a table top, I knew it wouldn't be in there forever.  Now that Vivian has to stand up to everything, the glass wasn't staying in one place for long.

So here is Vivian's new, improved and very open bedroom.

It seems huge now with all the open space on the floor.  I moved the stuffed animals down to a basket for her to play with.

The desk is still in the same place.

I need to get around to checking the fuses for her room - two of the three outlets in there don't work, so that's why there's a big ole power bar beside the desk.

Next up is getting a nice area rug in there for Vivian.  I've got my eye on this one at Ikea, and just have to get around to making the trip there.

The only problem with the new room configuration?  I have no idea where to change her now.  I kind of switch between the floor in the living room and the floor in the bathroom.  Either way, I end up having to chase her around to get the diaper on.  At least she's isn't falling off a bed while it's happening though.
