Licence to tile...

As February approaches I'm getting more and more excited about our move. Next Monday is February the 1st, which will mark our final rent payment! I couldn't be happier. We have our apartment until the end of March and close on the house on March 1st, so we'll have lots of time (in an ideal world) to move and make some changes to the house. I'm sure that we won't have the resources to make all the changes that I want to make right away, but priority one for me is repainting the cabinets in the kitchen...

That's our new kitchen. Nothing too fancy, but it's clean and simple. I like the white cabinets (although I dream of the day when I can rip them out and tear out that bulkhead too and have lovely, tall cabinets!) but they need a fresh coat of paint to brighten them up. I really, really want to be able to do this before we move in, as opposed to moving in and then having to take everything out of the cabinets to be able to paint them.
I'm also pretty keen on tiling a super cool backsplash in the kitchen. All those DIY shows have definitely gotten to me! My mom and I took a workshop at the Home Depot last night about tiling, so now we're ready to go! I would love to do something in a cool mosaic, or with subway tiles. I was thinking about just standard horizontal subway tiles to give it a clean, simple look, but look how pretty they are when you do them up vertically...
(Source for both photos)
Isn't that a cool, modern touch to simple tiles? I'm really grooving on that yellow and grey kitchen...but I kind of had my little heart set on having grey in the living room with a purple accent wall and yellow pops in the accessories. Now I'm completely reconsidering things! What do you think? The floor is grey though, so I'm concerned that it might be too much grey...I was thinking of painting the kitchen like a vibrant spearmint green sort of colour.

Here's the living room.
Again, nothing fancy, but it's clean and simple. I love the crown moulding (I'm pretty sure that has a "u"...) and of course it's yellow and I want to paint over it, while pondering bringing yellow into another room. Sigh. The living room gets lots of natural light, but there's no real light fixture in there, so I might want to stay away from darker colours...tough choices.
Beyond that, I want to paint the master bedroom soon...here it is now...

Yeah, it's like a lime green. I have no idea what colour to paint the master bedroom though...something warm and cozy I guess...
The other bedrooms can wait to be painted, the smaller bedroom that we're thinking of using as an office is just a beige and that's fine for now, and the other bedroom is lime like the master bedroom. Hopefully it will be a nursery before too long, and then it will be Mario Bros. sky blue for the anticipated retro gaming themed nursery.
The bathroom has been recently renovated, but could use some paint. Right now it's what I call a "non-colour".
Yeah...it's like lavender-ish? I guess? I don't know, I'm a fan of colour in the bathroom. I'll probably just find accessories that I really like and then paint the bathroom to match. Bathrooms are easy to change, so I'm not too concerned about it.

We also have the whole basement which needs to be finished off. It's been drywalled and primed, we just need to paint and add flooring. I can't decide what kind of flooring we should put down there...my gut says carpet, but I think it would be a hassle. I love cork flooring too, so maybe we'll consider that. This is a project for down the road though, not immediately.

There is a tonne of room in the basement, and I would love to make room for a bar and have a big rec room. Something cozy.

We also have room for Jagger's man cave in the basement...

It needs to be finished off - I'll be taking drywall classes soon enough! It's nice that our house is finished enough that it's move-in ready, but unfinished enough to give us room to personalize it.

What are your thoughts? Any colour schemes we should consider?

3:58 a.m.

The above is the time that I received a phone call this morning. That's right, someone felt it necessary to call me at 3:58 a.m. about a transcript that they ordered. I was hoping to give them the benefit of the doubt that maybe they thought they were calling an office (as opposed to my cell phone) and figured they would just leave a message and someone would call them back during business hours, but in the message he says he doesn't have a number that he can be reached at, so he'll have to call back some other time. So clearly, he was expecting someone to answer the phone.

He did call back, at 4:10 a.m.

Who does this?

House!

Well, it looks like we've done it! We made an offer on a house yesterday and it was accepted! Things have been set into motion, and it's happening very quickly! We have to get our home inspection figured out and our financing secured before next Friday, so it's going to be a very, very busy week! Closing date is March 1st, I can hardly believe it!

We're not really excited yet, because we're too busy being terrified right now. I'm sure that once we get through everything next week we'll get more into excitement mode. It's a huge step, and one that I've been looking forward to for a really, really long time.

Hunting

Well, the hunt officially begins tomorrow. We met with a realtor last night and he's taking us out tomorrow afternoon to start seeing some homes. It's really exciting, but scary at the same time. We're pretty easy to deal with though, we came to the realtor with a bunch of houses that we were already interested in, so we've done that part of the job for him already!

As usual, I'm being my super-organized crazy self. I've already packed a bag for the day tomorrow. It includes...

- clipboard and notebook
- pens, both black and red
- my binder of house information sheets
- tape measure
- level
- camera
- slippers
- bottle of water

Am I crazy? Or crazy like a fox? Any suggestions on what we should look for in a house or what I should bring to check out these potential homes? Wish us luck!

I love it when that happens...

The best thing happened last night. I love it when this happens, and it doesn't happen very often. It's like finding a unicorn.

We went to bed early last night, for once. Usually bedtime is around 11:00-11:30, which usually means I don't fall asleep until closer to 12:00. Last night I was in bed watching House Hunters at 10:00 while hubby dozed off. I turned out the light at 10:30, it was bliss. I fell asleep quickly for once, and it was awesome.

Of course, those glasses of water I had before bed reared their ugly head eventually, forcing me out of my warm bed to go to the bathroom.

Now, I don't know about you, but when I have to get up in the middle of the night, I make a concentrated effort not to look at the clock. I stumble around in the dark, eyes half closed, not turning on any lights. I do whatever I can to preserve my sleep-like state. Last night I was extra tired when I got up. I remember thinking, "Man, I hope it's not close to 6:30, I really don't want to wake up yet." Usually, I will wake up like that mere minutes before the alarm is set to go off and I don't get the best sleep of all - the falling back asleep sleep. Anyway, as I'm stumbling back to bed, for whatever reason I peeked at the alarm clock. I was fully expecting it to say something close to 6:00, meaning I would be woken up by the alarm clock soon but instead I saw the most glorious sight...

1:18 a.m.

Man, that's awesome. To be able to crawl back into bed knowing that I have hours and hours of sleeping ahead of me yet. Best. Sleep. Ever.

Outlook for 2010

So, here goes. I don't like making resolutions, never have. Instead, I'm going more along the lines of hopes and goals for the year.

2010 is shaping up to be a very big year, so laying it all out in a list will hopefully help me keep things straight.

1. Find our first home. This is the big one. We're starting the house hunt, and we're both super excited and super scared.
2. Work on growing a person. Once we have the house, we're ready to start trying to fill it up. My sister is having a baby in May, and it would be awesome if there were cousins who are close in age.
3. Make our new house a home. This is really exciting to me. The idea of finding unique pieces to fill our house and make it special is something that I've been waiting to do for a long time. It's just not the same with an apartment.
4. In order to make our house a home, I would really like to find some fantastic vintage pieces of furniture and work on refinishing them myself.
5. Along the same lines, I want to get myself a new sewing machine and learn how to use it. I have big plans for pillow making and who knows what else I'll get into!
6. Keep track of the books I read. I mentioned this in my last post, I've started keeping track of the books that I read. I think it will be fun to look back at the end of the year and see all the ground I've covered.
7. Try to be more creative in the kitchen. I tend to fall back on the staples, but I blame this on the fact that our current kitchen is basically a closet. My hope is that once we have a house, I'll be free to cook more interesting and complicated things.
8. Host parties! I can't wait to have the room to be able to invite people over. We've already decided that we're having a cheeseburger picnic themed housewarming party - I can't wait!
9. Take care of myself. Not only physically, but financially. I would really like to make some good headway on my debt this year. This is definitely easier said than done!
10. Enjoy a satisfying finale to LOST. Oh yes, 2010 is a big year indeed. Come May, we'll know how LOST all ends, and I am confident that Darlton will not disappoint us.

Okay, I think ten is enough. What about you? Any hopes, wishes, plans, goals for 2010?

Things that are making me happy...

Wow - have you heard the news? Nonsense now has 10 followers! Count 'em - 10. That's double digits, my friends. Thank you all so much for the support! I'm sure this blog will be optioned as a movie very soon!

How were your holidays? Mine were both restful and busy. I didn't quite get everything read, watched, knitted and organized that I wanted to get done, but I did manage to blast through a lot of comics, tear apart a bookcase and a bed, take care of two crazy dogs, and watch a heck of a lot of HGTV marathons.

So, here we are at the beginning of 2010 - so much to look forward to! We're starting to look at houses - which is both exciting and terrifying! I'll no doubt be venting on here a lot. My sister is pregnant and is due in May - I can't wait to meet my first niece or nephew! So much coming up this year, it's going to be a good one, I can feel it.

In that spirit, I thought I would share some of my favourite things right now, just some things that are making me happy. I want to do a post about my goals and hopes for 2010, but that can come some other time.

Without further ado, here are the things that are making me happy!

1. This is my new Astro Boy print that finally came in the mail from monstergallery. This is a great etsy shop with cute, colourful numbered prints. They're a great bargain too, I can't wait to buy a bunch and get them framed to make a cool wall display!

2. This is my table. I salvaged this table that someone threw out in our apartment building and it's the perfect little side table for my reading chair. Currently, it's covered in my LOST season 5 Blu-Rays and notes for the LOST rewatch, complete with my copy of Nikki Stafford's "Finding LOST: Season 5", books that I'm currently reading, books that I plan on reading very soon, the graphic novels I'm reading for the Graphic Novel Group this weekend, and my notebooks. Currently, I have a notebook on the go for my food diary, one for the graphic novel group and one that's a catch-all kind of place. Inspired by sonshine music's blog, I want to keep track of all the books that I read this year, so I'm using that book for that. Also inspired by my friend Dan's column, I hope to do a bit of journalling this year. It will probably just end up being a collection of the post it notes and scraps of paper that I usually have, but we'll see how it goes.

3. Sibling Rivalry is my new favourite wine, based solely on the packaging. I must admit, I'm not exactly a wine aficionado - I tend to pick wines based solely on the label. This one was a no-brainer. Come on, it looks like the opening credits to "Juno" threw up all over this bottle. In a good way.

It's called "Sibling Rivalry" because it's three brothers that make the wine. The cap has paper, scissors and rock on it to represent each brother. The best part? Not only is it an Ontario wine, it's got a screw top on it. Gotta love that easy access.

4. Domo. Domo was a gift from our friend's Dan and Amanda. He has since earned a place in our hearts due to the fear he strikes in the hearts of the cats. It used to be that we would roar and chase the cats with him - now all we have to do is hold him up in front of the cats and it's enough for them to run down the hall. Endless entertainment.

5. Yeah, so on my organization quest over the holidays, I decided to throw away our bed frame. It was a homemade thing and instead of a box spring, we had Styrofoam. Seriously. So, now we have a mattress on the floor. I love it, I find it so cozy and I've been sleeping so well since I did this. I try to tell myself it's modern and minimalist, not poor looking. Jagger is not loving the floor bed quite so much.
P.S. - Fun fact - I made the bed just to take this picture. I'm not really a bed-making fan. I've never seen the point in it!

P.P.S. - I also have no idea why this section is underlined, and I couldn't figure out how to fix it. So there you go.

6. The Febreze Luminaire. This this is awesome. I got it in my stocking for Christmas and it's just as awesome as it seems on TV. The scent fills the room quickly and it doesn't even have to be turned on. It looks pretty and I don't have to worry about the cats knocking it over and burning down the apartment. Bonus.

7. My hubby. Jagger's come up with some great comments lately. He's always funny, but his most recent two comments have stuck with me. I've been on a bit of a tea binge lately, drinking four or five peppermint teas a day. So Jagger was in the kitchen the other night and I'd left the kettle sitting out on the counter. "Babe, are you done with your tea making thing?" Seriously? My tea-making thing? It's a kettle, it boils water, not make tea. Oh, honey. His other comment was after seeing a commercial about the Olympics encouraging Canadians to "paint the town red". Jagger of course turns this into "Let's paint my wife dead". Yep, he's a charmer all right. Hands off, ladies - he's all mine.

So, there you have it. Those are the things that are making me happy in my little world right now. Like I said, I'm planning a post for my hopes and goals for 2010 (but not any resolutions!)

What are you all looking forward to in 2010? Did you get anything at Christmas that is making you particularly happy?
